a centered approach for calm confidence and high-impact teaching
As music teachers, we love what we do.
Empowering our students to grow as musicians, helping them to achieve their artistic potential, and seeing how the skills they learn through music impact their whole lives — it’s thrilling and satisfying work.
But all too often, we find ourselves burnt-out, exhausted, and on the edge of giving up.
We feel like there’s never enough time to do everything we need to do. We struggle with exhaustion and feeling rushed. And we feel like we’re never getting any closer to our long-term goals.
As musicians, we’ve honed our abilities to think and listen critically, strive for excellence, and work through problems in a disciplined and systematic way. We expect greatness from ourselves and from our students and we are willing to work with great intensity to achieve our goals.
Unfortunately, we rarely get the chance to learn how to balance our critical thinking, perfectionism, and workaholism with the crucial skills of non-judgmental awareness, acceptance, and equanimity. As a result, we find ourselves overcome with negative self-talk, doubt, exhaustion, and hopelessness.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
The Power of Meditation
If you’re looking for a way to rediscover the joy of teaching, return to the calm and focused teacher you know you can be, let go of self-doubt, and get back on track toward your long-term goals, developing a meditation practice will change your life.
Years ago, a mentor recommended I try mindfulness meditation as a way to overcome stage fright. I was desperate, so I was willing to try anything. To my surprise, I experienced a profound shift within several weeks — I felt freer on stage, more connected to the audience, and less judgmental and negative. Somehow, a simple meditation practice had transformed my perspective and opened up a whole new world of possibilities.
After such an exciting early experience with meditation, I was intrigued! What if there were other meditation techniques I could use to improve my musical life?
It took years of study, experimentation, research, and teaching for me to find what meditation practices work for me, my students, and my clients (and which ones don’t). After a Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a dissertation on meditation practices for musicians and advanced training as a yoga teacher and meditation instructor, I am thrilled to share what I have learned with you.

About Dr. Travis Baird
While working on my Master’s degree in viola performance, I was the textbook definition of a perfectionist. I practiced 5+ hours every day. If I made a mistake, I couldn’t let it go until I was certain it would never happen again. And I held myself to impossibly high expectations.
While my perfectionism had its benefits, the habits I created were not sustainable…they threatened to destroy my happiness, my love of playing, and my sanity.
My unrealistic expectations transformed into crippling stage fright and self-doubt. My extreme hard work led to exhaustion, pain, and eventually burnout.
When I started teaching, these issues only got worse. On top of my personal struggles, these issues started spilling into my teaching and negatively impacting my students. I was overcome with shame and guilt, but I had no idea what I could do to make things better.
Everything changed when a mentor recommended I try meditation. Over the next few years, I slowly learned how to balance my perfectionism with non-judgmental awareness, acceptance, and equanimity. It wasn’t easy, but after years of training, self-study, research, and teaching, I developed a personal approach to living with joyful mindfulness as a music teacher.
I started sharing what I had learned with other musicians and music teachers and quickly discovered the incredible impact meditation practices could have. With that knowledge, I launched dynamicmusicteacher.com to reach musicians and music teachers around the world.
Since then, I’ve given workshops at national and international conferences, universities around the country, and summer institutes. I enjoy working with a wide range of musicians, from professional soloists and chamber musicians, to hobbyists, to conservatory students, to first-year beginners, to experienced educators.
What would it be like to become a calm, confident, high-impact music teacher?
What if you were the kind of insightful, life-changing mentor and educator whose impact goes beyond their own students? How might you set an example that changes the lives of not just your students, but your students’ students? What if you could start a lineage of powerful teaching that spans multiple generations?
How would your students benefit if you could help each individual overcome performance anxiety, move beyond fear of failure, and embrace a positive mindset?
What would it be like to connect with every one of your students in a genuine and positive way, supporting their long-term success in the most powerful way possible?
In the Mindful Music Teaching Mastermind, my goal is to guide you to learn the skills you need to reach your ultimate potential as a musician, teacher, and leader and to cultivate the long-term motivation and discipline that it takes to get there.
Q: What is a Mastermind?
A: A Mastermind is a group coaching format in which you learn from a facilitator (Dr. Travis Baird) and by interacting with your peers in the group. This Mastermind is capped at 10 members to maximize your 1-on-1 time with Dr. Baird while also allowing for high group engagement, collaboration, and insight. Each week, we meet for a group call with all members. Between calls, you will receive guidance, prompts, and new information in a members-only Facebook group.
Q: When does the Mindful Music Teaching Mastermind start and end?
A: Mindful Music Teaching Mastermind begins during the week of November 27, 2017 (the week after Thanksgiving) and ends during the week of December 18.
Q: When will the calls be scheduled?
A: Group calls will be scheduled at times that suit the needs of music teachers in the mastermind. When you join the Mastermind, I will connect with you to determine scheduling availability. If you are unable to make it to a scheduled call time, no worries! I record every session and make the recordings available to you the next day.
Q: What if I miss a call?
A: No worries! We record every call and make it available the next day for your viewing. If you know ahead of time that you will miss a call, you may submit questions via email and I will answer them during the call.
Q: I’m really busy…how much time will I need to complete everything each week?
A: To get the most out of this mastermind, I recommend that you attend the weekly group coaching call (90 minutes) and spend around another 1 hour total during the week before the next call (around 2.5 hours total per week). If you’re looking for more to do, have no fear — I will gladly share additional assignments, readings, and exercises with members who are eager for more.
Q: Do I need to be a meditation expert to join?
A: No, the Mindful Music Teaching Mastermind is designed with the beginner meditator in mind. If you already have a meditation practice, this mastermind will empower you to deepen your practice and apply it to your life as a music teacher.
