I was only 3 notes into my performance and I was already shaking.
My mind raced as I frantically tried to come up with a way to get my nerves under control. I tried everything I could to calm down, telling myself:
“Ok Travis, just relax. You know getting nervous doesn’t help. JUST RELAX – STOP SHAKING!”
If you’ve ever been nervous on stage, you know how well this approach worked.
Not well. In fact, it only made things worse.
I was playing in a Master Class for one my musical idols. I had prepared for months with the hope that I could impress her enough to study with her again in the future.
But my performance was unraveling. All the work I had put in to memorize this huge piece of music was for nothing if my shaking bow and trembling hands couldn’t produce a beautiful sound.
The next 30 minutes went by in a blur. I don’t remember much about the performance other than that it was terrifying and miserable.
After the Master Class ended, I went home and cried.
I knew I had a choice: either find a way to get my stage fright under control or give up and never perform again.
But of course I couldn’t give up – there had to be another way.
My Performance Mindset
So I made a promise to myself right then: I would do everything I could to learn how to perform with confidence, grace, and poise.
Over the next 6 years, I studied meditation, yoga, sports psychology, visualization, and I talked to everyone I could find who offered advice on performing with confidence…
And slowly but surely, it all came together. I learned what I needed to do to banish my pre-performance doubts, turn fear into excitement, and truly love performing.
Now, after performances, people come backstage to tell me how happy, comfortable, and engaged I looked and sounded. I’m consistently amazed at how far I’ve come. I’m so thankful for what I’ve learned and I’m honored to share it with you.
