For many of us, the thought of performing sends us into a panic.
Immediately, we imagine all the ways things could go horribly wrong.
And there’s a lot to worry about: technical challenges, wardrobe malfunctions, memory slips…
If you’re like a lot of musicians, you may even worry about feeling worried.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
I used to fear performing.
In the practice room, everything was great. I thrived on the pressure of learning new pieces and mastering difficult techniques.
But when it came time to perform, something changed…dread set in.
And I got really tired of the miserable, nervous, pit-of-your-stomach anxiety that I’d get before every performance.
So I took action.
I devoured every resource I could find, I trained in yoga and meditation, I experimented with a bunch of different methods, and eventually…I found an approach that worked for me.
After a handful of habit adjustments, my whole attitude about performing changed.
I started to enjoy performing. I even looked forward to challenging performances.
During grad school, I shared my new approach to performing with my musician colleagues. I coached a few of them and started discovering ways to personalize it to make it even more powerful.
That’s when I decided to start Performance Mindset Coaching.

Before speaking with Travis I frequently struggled with performance anxiety. I would try to keep from thinking about being nervous, but always ended up making mistakes on music that I could always play successfully when I was alone in a practice room. Travis was able to teach me how to center my thoughts without trying to bottle up my nervous feelings. Now when I perform, instead of tearing myself down, I go in with confidence and a positive attitude.
I had great difficulty with performance anxiety. Once I began to practice these meditation techniques, I learned how to handle my anxiety issues and successfully perform with more confidence and composure. I continue to use the technique of visualizing the perfect performance, and utilize the breathing exercises before my performances. I am very thankful for the opportunity I had working with Travis, and with this knowledge, I will pursue more tactics to minimize performance anxiety.
